Lycos Expands Internet Search Capabilities.(Originated from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Sep. 18--Lycos, the Pittsburgh-spawned Internet search engine, has undergone a major face lift that includes the ability to search the Internet for individual sound, videos and other multimedia files.

Search engines allow users to put in key words or phrases to locate documents on the Internet. Lycos is the first that enables users to search for individual multimedia files.

The search engine uses special programs called "spiders" to search the Web for sound clips, pictures, graphics and video, which it stores in two databases. Users access the database and click on a highlighted link to get to the file.
