Small Business Administration Official Notes Rapid Growth of Women-Owned Firms.(Originated from The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.)

TACOMA, Wash.--Sep. 17--The recent increase in the number of women running their own businesses is "really staggering," says the Small Business Administration's Sherrye Henry.

Twenty years ago, she points out, 6 percent of all U.S. businesses were owned by women. Today that figure is approaching between 40 percent and 50 percent.

And Washington state is among the leaders in the change.

Washington is 14th out of the 50 states in the number of women-owned businesses, Henry says. The state has 188,000 women-owned businesses employing 510,000, which generate $61.6 billion in sales a year.
