Unocal Signs Deal to Install Refinery Air Monitoring System.(Originated from Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, Calif.)

RODEO, Calif.--Nov. 5--Unocal oil refinery officials and community groups signed a deal Monday to install what they believe is the world's most comprehensive refinery air monitoring system.

The high-tech air sensors will continually scan the refinery perimeter for 35 toxic chemicals, protecting the community from future chemical accidents and day-to-day emissions, community activists said.

Most refineries only measure two air pollutants hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide.

"This is a landmark system that makes other refineries look like they're in the stone age," said Julia May, clean air director for San Francisco-based Communities for a Better Environment. "It will improve safety and cut down on accidents."
