Village Voice to Launch Alternative Weekly on Long Island.(Originated from Daily News, New York)

Nov. 6--The Village Voice announced yesterday that it will launch an alternative weekly on Long Island next spring and that a top New York Post editor will run it.

In his most aggressive expansion here since purchasing the Voice in 1985, owner Leonard Stern will push into the suburbs with the Long Island Voice, a free alternative weekly modeled on the downtown tabloid.

Stern -- the pet food magnate who runs Hartz Mountain Industries -- will invest millions of dollars in the publication and hire a staff of 20 in hopes of gaining a circulation of 50,000, said Voice publisher David Schneiderman, who will head the project.
