AMD Starts Shipping New Chip to Compete with Pentium.(Originated from Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, Calif.)

Nov. 15--There's a new chip in town, one that could intensify the computer wars next year.

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. says it has begun shipping samples of its newest computer chip, which AMD claims can battle toe-to-toe with Intel Corp.'s family of Pentium and Pentium Pro microprocessors. Microprocessors are the dime-sized but powerful electronic brains of a personal computer.

AMD's stock jumped 14.5 percent Thursday, closing up $3.13 at $24.75. The closing price was a 52-week high, and more than twice the low price of $10.50 reached in July by the computer chip maker.
