Hospitals Poised for Spate of Mergers, Partnerships.(Originated from The Business Press, Ontario, Calif.)

Jan. 6--Hospitals across the country experienced unprecedented acquisition activity last year. For-profit health care giants like Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., long a force to contend with in the South, made inroads in Northern California by snapping up weaker health care systems.
The Southern California hospital market seems poised for a flurry of consolidations and acquisitions this year.
But a law that took effect Jan. 1 is likely to alter the way giant health care organizations merge with smaller hospitals. Under the new law, nonprofit hospitals that want to make the transition to a for-profit status will undergo increased scrutiny.
