Hopes for Holiday Sales Still Ride High at Mattel Power Wheels in Fort Wayne.(Originated from The News-Sentinel, Fort Wayne, Ind.)

FORT WAYNE, Ind.--Jan. 6--Christmas catalogs are barely in the recycling bin and holiday sale promotions are just starting to fade from memory, but workers at Mattel Power Wheels/Fort Wayne already are looking to the 1997 yuletide shopping season.

"A lot of concept work for 1998 is happening now, and a lot of design work for 1997 is happening," said Reg Tygret, vice president for the operation. The plant at 3405 Meyer Road employs 600 workers making children's ride-on vehicles.

Mattel produces 80 percent of the battery-powered kiddie cars sold in the United States. And with cars from a competing local manufacturer, Peg Perego USA, Fort Wayne's production comes to at least 90 percent of the total.
