Zenith Signs On with Oracle to Build Network Computers.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

LAS VEGAS--Jan. 9--Oracle Corp. has recruited a second large television manufacturer to make network computers, low-cost devices touted by Oracle founder Larry Ellison as the way most homes and offices will some day connect to the Internet.

At a news conference on the eve of the annual Consumer Electronics Show here, Zenith Electronics Corp. of Glenview, Ill., said it will introduce a network computer, or NC, at mid-year for about $500 or less.

The NC is supposed to connect to a television set and telephone line, delivering World Wide Web pages and running small programs called "applets" written in the new Java programming language. Users would also be able to send and receive electronic mail.
