America Online Spending Extra $100 Million to Stop Busy Signals.(Originated from The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Jan. 17--Faced with a flurry of subscriber lawsuits and mounting complaints over constant busy signals from its modems, America Online Inc. Thursday said it would spend an extra $100 million to add capacity to its strained computer system.

The company said it also planned to sharply reduce distribution of its ubiquitous free trial disks to slow the rate of new memberships.

More than 8 million people have AOL accounts -- up from 6 million in September -- and each subscriber averages 32 minutes online each day, twice the time spent online before the company switched to a flat monthly fee of $19.95 instead of metered pricing, according to figures provided by the company Thursday.
