Jan. 22--Lucent Technologies earned a $859 million during the first fiscal quarter as a result of higher sales of wireless and fiber optic network equipment.

It was Lucent's first profit report since it was spun off from AT&T Corp. last fall. Lucent's net profits rose to $1.35 per share to reverse a loss of $1.60 per share a year earlier. During 1995, the Murray Hill company lost more than $1 billion because of a $1.8 billion restructuring charge.

The software and communications-equipment firm was spun off from AT&T last year. It is the nation's 35th largest corporation, formed as AT&T splint into three units. The third unit, NCR Corp., was cut loose late last month.
