Intel Trims Prices on Some Pentium Chips; PC Costs May Drop.(Originated from Contra Costa Times, Walnut Creek, Calif.)

Jan. 30--The good times will keep on rolling for personal computer users: Intel Corp. disclosed Wednesday it has slashed prices on several varieties of its Pentium chip.

The company reduced prices from 2 percent to 34 percent on its Pentium, Pentium Pro and Pentium MMX microprocessors. Intel officials said the reductions applied to "a couple of dozen" microprocessors, which are the dime-sized but powerful electronic brains for most personal computers.

"It's good for the consumers, because PC makers will be able to cut prices," said Brian Eisenbarth, analyst with the San Francisco-based investment firm Collins & Co. "PC makers have been able to make up their lower prices with additional sales volume."
