Feb. 3--Science fiction writer William Gibson was right -- sort of.

Johnnie Mnemonic, the protagonist of his novella and subsequent movie, is a futuristic courier with a hard-drive in his brain -- a man wanted less for his human qualities than the high-tech secrets crammed into his head.

It's a crass, but basic, analogy that explains why the top executives from Informix Software Inc. of Menlo Park will square off in a Portland, Ore., courtroom Friday against archrival Oracle Corp. of Redwood City. They'll be fighting over what's inside the heads of 11 talented developers who two weeks ago abandoned Informix's Portland research facility and joined Oracle.
