Barnett Banks Doubles Chief Executive Officer's Pay.(Originated from St. Petersburg Times, Fla.)

Mar. 4--The chief of Florida's biggest bank just got his biggest raise.
Charles Rice, chairman and chief executive officer of Jacksonville's Barnett Banks Inc., saw his total compensation more than double last year to $6.37 million.
"His compensation is in recognition of Barnett's strong performance in 1996, which included record profits and record profitability," said Barnett spokesman David Palombi.
Since Barnett had record earnings in 1996, the company's board of directors decided to reward Rice with record pay, the company said in regulatory filings on Monday.
