Murdoch Prepares to Launch New Satellite Assault on U.S. Television Market.(Originated from The Boston Globe)

WASHINGTON--Mar. 23--Rupert Murdoch is often portrayed as a menacing figure, thanks to his conquest of newspaper and TV markets from England to Asia to his native Australia. But the Darth Vader image is only one reason his new project has earned the nickname "Death Star."
The ominous name refers to the mortal threat Murdoch may pose to the maturing US cable TV industry and the young satellite television business.
Murdoch announced plans late last month for the newest jewel in his global communications empire: the first 500-channel television service in the United States. Called Sky, the service could be available in some cities as early as this year.
