BankBoston Says It's Neither Imposing ATM Fee Nor Joining Alliance.(Originated from The Boston Globe)

Mar. 25--BankBoston Corp. said yesterday it has no plans to impose surcharges on automated teller machine transactions, but it won't join an alliance of Massachusetts banks pledging to remain surcharge-free.

A spokesman said BankBoston did not want to join the 95-member alliance because that could potentially restrict the bank's control of marketing and signage at its 1,500 ATMs. Alliance members have agreed to affix a SAM (for surcharge-free auto-teller machine) logo to their machines.

"We considered joining, but we just didn't see any upside to it because we don't have any plan for surcharging," said Bruce Spitzer of BankBoston.
