BellSouth Seeks Approval to Offer Long-distance Service to S.C.(Originated from The Herald, Rock Hill, S.C.)

Apr. 3--BellSouth says it's ready to provide long-distance service in South Carolina and has asked the state Public Service Commission for permission.

BellSouth's long distance service could start this fall, company spokesman Don Caughman said.

"More competition in the long-distance market is good for everyone," Caughman said. "This request to the PSC is the next step in our entry into long distance in South Carolina."

The PSC has scheduled a June 23 hearing and should decide soon after whether to grant BellSouth's request.

The Federal Communications Commission must give final approval.
