Kaiser Permanente Admits Substandard Patient Care in Some California Hospitals.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Apr. 4--Kaiser Permanente officials issued a public mea culpa Thursday acknowledging that their East Bay hospitals don't meet standards for patient care and vowing to fix problems quickly.

Despite the vow, the union representing Kaiser's 7,500 registered nurses announced at roughly the same time Thursday that it will stage a one-day strike April 16 at the HMO behemoth's 47 Northern California hospitals and clinics, including those in San Jose and Santa Clara.

"Any problems in the East Bay are problems manufactured by Kaiser Permanente, and they're not isolated to the East Bay," said Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of the California Nurses Assn. "We're at war with Kaiser...because of the phenomenal erosion of patient care quality in Kaiser...
