Glut of Office Paper Ends Once-Profitable Mississippi Recycling Program.(Originated from The Sun Herald, Biloxi, Miss.)

BILOXI, Miss.--Apr. 9--A market glut of office paper has virtually ended once- profitable office paper recycling programs on the Coast.

"The cost to collect it exceeds the amount you can get from selling it," said Jo Williamson, Browning-Ferris Industries' market development manager for South Mississippi.

BFI had been recycling nearly 654 tons of office paper each month, which saved landfill space. The price for mixed office paper has dropped from $120 per ton to the point where the recycler must be paid to take it. Cardboard is $55 to $65 a ton. Computer paper sells for $145 a ton.

"We never made any money off it, but we were losing an astronomical amount of money," Williamson said. "I can assure you it's a last resort."...
