San Francisco Garbage Strike Takes Residents by Surprise.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

SAN FRANCISCO--Apr. 25--With piles of rotting garbage threatening to mar the city's reputation for beauty and the mayor unwilling to declare a state of emergency, San Franciscans were bracing themselves Thursday for a garbage strike that could take days, even weeks, to resolve.

The 600 garbage collectors who went on strike at 12:01 a.m. Thursday had plenty of sympathy among residents of this strongly pro-union town, but as trash continued to mount, support for the work stoppage weakened.

Sandra Fitz, a secretary in the city's Financial District, said she had to step over trash to get to her office building Thursday morning.

"It's disgusting," she said. "I'm with the garbage men, but it better be over soon."
