Hewlett-Packard to Abandon Back-Up Power Supply Business.(Originated from Providence Journal-Bulletin, R.I.)

May 1--Computer industry giant Hewlett-Packard announced yesterday it is getting out of the back-up power supply business, a move that lifts a cloud that has hung over West Kingston, R.I.-based American Power Conversion since HP said 2 1/2 years ago it would go after APC's chief products.

The two companies said in a joint news release that HP will no longer produce, supply or support its PowerWise products, effective today. APC will now provide ongoing warranty support to HP's current PowerWise customers, the two companies said.

APC purchased the assets of HP's PowerWise business for an undisclosed amount, said Deborah K. Grey, APC's manager of investor relations.
