Infomercial King Paxson Buying Two Florida TV Stations.(Originated from St. Petersburg Times, Fla.)

May 6--Not long ago, infomercial king Lowell "Bud" Paxson was a marked man in television.

Many industry experts derided his programing -- canned programs hawking everything from makeup to mutual funds -- and cable operators prepared to bounce his stations off their systems, saying they drew few viewers.

But a Supreme Court decision last month requiring cable systems to carry every locally broadcast station put Paxson in the catbird's seat.

An announcement Monday that Paxson Communications is buying WFCT-Ch. 66 in St. Petersburg and WCTD-Ch. 35 in Miami furthers the West Palm Beach-based company's goal of offering bona fide TV programs on its growing network of stations, which now reaches more than 22-million homes.
