ORANGE, Calif.--May 16--The joke among Orange County health care executives is that the Sisters of St. Joseph are tough business people.
While it may be hard to imagine a handful of matronly women forging a company that dominates the county's health care business, they've done it.
The nuns -- there are about 220 sisters of St. Joseph of Orange -- have created the county's largest hospital chain and doctors network.
"They are the powerhouse in Orange County," said Charles Madden, chief executive of Orange Coast Managed Care Services, both competitor and client of St. Joseph. "You pretty much have to work with them or through them in Orange County."
