Upstart Plans to Compete for Boston Cable Television Market.(Originated from The Boston Globe)

May 21--Get ready for a cable television donnybrook in Boston.

Video upstart RCN, which provides service to 3,000 customers in the Back Bay area, says it plans to seek a franchise to provide cable service throughout the city. That would put RCN in direct competition with Cablevision of Boston, currently the only citywide cable provider.

Meanwhile Cablevision, which has argued that RCN has no right to offer cable TV service at all, has asked the Federal Communications Commission for the right to transmit TV programs over the RCN cable system. Cablevision wants to use the RCN system because its own system is nearly filled to capacity. But RCN says it will fight the Cablevision proposal.
