U.S. Steel's Gary Works, Ind., Ranks as State's Top Polluter.(Originated from Post-Tribune, Gary, Ind.)

GARY, Ind.--May 21--Indiana remains one of the country's most polluted states and U.S. Steel's Gary Works ranks as the state's top polluter, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 1995 Toxic Release Inventory.

Indiana's ranking rose from 11th to 9th in the country for total toxic releases in the EPA inventory. More than 62 million pounds of pollutants were pumped into the environment in 1995, the EPA inventory found.

Overall, however, Indiana companies have reduced chemical releases by 61 percent since 1988, according to EPA and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.

U.S. Steel was the top emitter in the state, releasing a total of 11.6 million pounds of pollutants that year.
