Jun. 6--Johnson & Johnson yesterday swapped three consumer-health products for Motrin and another item made by Pharmacia & Upjohn Inc. in a bid to boost its share of the $2.5 billion analgesics market.
The deal, which is unusual because money isn't changing hands, is only the latest instance in which makers of consumer-health products are actively revamping their line-ups. Novartis Corp., for instance, is about to complete the sale of 14 items.
Known for Tylenol, Johnson & Johnson now has an opportunity to go head-tohead with American Home Products Corp., which makes Advil. The active ingredient in Tylenol, the leading analgesic, is acetaminophen, while both Motrin and Advil contain ibuprofen.
