America Online's Influence Has Internet Filled with Chatter.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Jun. 10--Three years ago, America Online became the first of the Big Three consumer online services to open a gateway from its walled metropolis to the section of the Internet called Usenet newsgroups. The old guard on Usenet was somewhat divided over this news: Some called it the most calamitous act since the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. No, others said, it was surely the worst disaster to befall humanity since Mrs. O'Leary's cow tipped over that lantern. Others didn't bother arguing historical precedent. They simply called the invasion "the end of the Net as we know it." They predicted that instead of assimilating into the mainstream of Net culture, the AOLites would overrun it and invent it anew in their own image.

Well, they were right. Sort...
