Jun. 23--Soon, buying a desktop computer will be like choosing a president. You won't just be picking a machine, you'll be buying into an entire philosophy.

Users may vote for computing-as-usual, performing whatever tasks they please on powerful but complicated personal computers. Or they may find their desks occupied by stripped-down devices -- the monikers are NC and the brand-new NetPC -- that are easier to use but nearly impossible to customize.

Businesses must decide whether to keep the PC systems they've spent millions accumulating. Or they can opt for new models that promise low-cost maintenance and greater control -- but are still largely unproven in the workplace.
