Networking Technology Firm Bay Networks Buys California Company.(Originated from The Boston Globe)

Jun. 20--Bay Networks Inc. has staked out a position in a new high-speed networking technology with the $155 million purchase of Rapid City Communications of Mountain View, Calif.

Rapid City is one of several small companies working on a technology called gigabit Ethernet. Most corporate computer networks use a communications standard called Ethernet, which can transmit data at speeds of 10 million or 100 million bits per second. But this is too slow for the huge demands being placed on many corporate networks, said Bay Networks chairman David House.

"Companies are struggling to meet the networking requirements of their customers," House said.
