SAN JOSE, Calif.--Jul. 17--Network computers for the home, long touted as the best way to deliver the Internet to those who don't want or can't afford a personal computer, are finally getting real -- a year behind schedule.

At a news conference this morning in New York, the RCA division of Thomson Consumer Electronics will unveil the first home NCs to have actual model numbers, prices and shipping dates.

The NC is the brainchild of Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison. He originally claimed that more than a dozen manufacturers around the world would start shipping NCs in September 1996 -- a boast that didn't come true.
