Columbus, Ga., Commercial Construction More than Doubled from Year Ago.(Originated from Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Ga.)

Sep. 4--Commercial construction in Columbus is blowing the roof off.

But residential building is lagging behind the pace builders set last year, according to a mid-year report by F.W. Dodge, a division of The McGraw-Hill companies.

"This will be year three (of residential building decline)," said Mike Daniels, an economist for the Abbott Turner School of Business at Columbus State University. "Our projections for this year was for it to be down again."

Contracts for non-residential building for the first half of the year in the Columbus area were more than double the same period in 1996, climbing to $90.7 million from $36 million. Non-residential includes commercial, manufacturing, educational, religious, administrative,...
