Legislative Vote Imminent on ATM Surcharges in Massachusetts.(Originated from The Boston Globe)

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News, September, 1997 by Mohl, Bruce

Sep. 10--Two key lawmakers yesterday set the stage for a Beacon Hill showdown on a bill banning automated teller machine surcharges, rescuing the issue from legislative oblivion and promising to push for a committee vote by October.

The co-chairmen of the Legislature's joint Banking Committee -- Senator Paul White of Boston and Representative Philip Travis of Rehoboth -- put aside their sharp differences on ATM surcharges and agreed to let votes rather than parliamentary tactics decide the outcome of the debate.

Sources said the two lawmakers will today announce plans to push for a hearing and then a vote on White's bill banning surcharges, all before White leaves the Legislature to work for Boston College on Oct. 1.
