Sep. 10--Bickering between U.S. Airways Inc. and its pilots increased this week when the pilots' union declined to consider a company warning of more layoffs if the airlines' last contract offer is not ratified by Sept. 30.
US Airways maintains that if a new contract is not ratified by that date, the Virginia-based airline will be forced to cancel an order for 400 Airbus aircraft valued at $14 billion. The company also said it would have to discontinue its shuttle service among Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C., resulting in the layoff of thousands of employees.
