Nostalgia Draws Many to A&W Drive-In Restaurant in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.(Originated from The Gazette, Cedar Rapids, Iowa)

Sep. 20--Cedar Rapids' only drive-in, the A&W Family Restaurant at 1136 Ellis Blvd. NW, has endured for more than 40 years.

The Ellis restaurant opened as the Boulevard Drive-In in the early '50s, first appearing in City Directory listings in 1954. During those early years, there was some competition -- other A&W locations, Dog & Suds Drive In on First Avenue and Joey's Drive In on Eighth Avenue.

But, as in other parts of the country, as fast-food restaurants entered the market and multiplied, the drive-ins began to close.

When Doug Ward, 53, bought the Ellis A&W 19 years ago, Joey's was the last remaining competitor in the city. By 1984, there were none.

Ward attributes the restaurant's staying power to the root beer...
