Sep. 26--The competitive landscape for wireless phones in the Bay Area now seems set -- at least for the next few years.

Sprint, the third-largest U.S. long-distance company, is preparing to launch its local wireless service within the month, a move that will intensify competition with the four networks already in place.

But federal regulators dealt what may be a crippling blow to another would-be competitor Thursday, and three other potential players remain sidelined for the near future.

The result is a mixed one for Bay Area consumers. Soon, they will be able to buy more with each dollar they spend on wireless phone service, industry officials say. But with the door to competitors apparently closing, there's little chance that...
