Sep. 3--Continuing a wave of consolidation in the local financial services industry, El Dorado-based Mid Continent Bancshares Inc., said late Tuesday that it had agreed to be acquired by Commercial Federal Corp. of Omaha.

The transaction, worth $84.15 million, is expected to close in the first half of 1998. It will combine two savings and loans with a total of 37 branches in Kansas.

"We're excited about the deal," said Richard Pottorff, president of Mid Continent, parent company of Mid-Continent Federal Savings.

"We like the way they do business and serve the community and take care of the customers."
