Wireless Network Is Activated at Penn State.(Originated from The Patriot-News, Harrisburg, Pa.)

Oct. 1--Pennsylvania State University, Cellular One and Northern Telecom have activated a $6 million private wireless network on the main campus in State College that will enhance cellular telephone service and wireless Internet communications for students and faculty.

"This network will bring together many new information technologies that few currently have access to in one location," said Penn State President Graham Spanier. "It will provide a rich atmosphere to advance student education, research and to help develop future wireless technologies."

Five cellular telephone antennas have been erected, including one on the roof of a student dormitory, Heister Hall.
