TCF Financial Executive Bob Evans to Retire.(Originated from Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Minn.)

Oct. 7--Bob Evans stood almost alone amid the ruins at TCF Financial in 1985. Forty-three managers had been sacked at the then deeply ailing savings and loan.
But incoming chief executive Bill Cooper decided that one thing still worked at TCF: marketing and retail banking, Evans' domain. So Evans kept his job. Twelve years later, TCF is posting stellar financial results -- results built partly on Evans' marketing initiatives.
Now, Evans is going out on top. He announced Monday that he's retiring as TCF's vice chairman, the company's third-highest-ranking position.
