Retail Sales Rise at Heilig-Meyers Co. of Virginia.(Originated from Richmond Times-Dispatch, Va.)

Oct. 8--Sales at stores open at least a year were up slightly at Heilig-Meyers Co. in September, but the figure was below what the company had expected.

The country's largest home furnishings retailer reported yesterday that those sales, also called same-store sales, rose 0.5 percent last month compared with the same month a year ago.

The same-store sales figure was four or five percentage points below what the Richmond-based chain had planned for, analysts said.

Overall sales, which increased 86.6 percent, also were modestly below plans, analysts said.

So far this year, same-store sales are up 3 percent and overall sales are up 73 percent.
