Hilton Hotels Buys Atlantic City Country Club in New Jersey.(Originated from The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Oct. 10--The storied Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield, N.J., where the term birdie was coined and which celebrated its centennial this year, has been sold to the Hilton Hotels Corp., which operates two Atlantic City casinos.

Hilton officials said the acquisition would enhance their casino facilities and help them attract visitors for more than a day. Hilton will honor 1997-98 country club memberships, which run through March, and squash memberships, which run through September, but the new owners might not offer any private memberships after that time.

Jim Fraser, the current club president, said the Fraser family would relinquish ownership with mixed emotions, but he said Hilton would be better able to keep the club viable.
