Oct. 4--New computer viruses are proliferating at an unprecedented rate due to the rapid transfer of data over the Internet, but researchers at IBM have devised a way to fight fire with fire.

They're using the Internet to distribute the "cure" even faster than the disease is transmitted.

At a computer virus conference in San Francisco this week, researchers from IBM's Watson Research Lab in New York unveiled technology that can detect and diagnose viruses -- a computer virus is software that can replicate itself and often causes harm to electronic data -- and instantaneously distribute a prescription to kill the virus around the Net.
