California Software Firm McAfee to Acquire Network General.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Oct. 14--McAfee Associates Inc., the Santa Clara company best known for its anti-viral software, announced it will acquire Menlo Park's Network General Corp., which makes computer network management tools, in a stock trade valued at $1.4 billion. The two companies will merge to form Network Associates Inc.
The deal is unusual because of its size, the eighth largest in Silicon Valley history. But it's consistent with McAfee's recent strategy and acquisitions of creating a one-stop shop for corporations seeking security for their computer networks.
