Boston-Based Liberty Mutual Group Looks for a Tax Break.(Originated from The Boston Globe)

Oct. 25--Gary Countryman isn't threatening to move his company out of Massachusetts. Even so, he thinks he deserves a tax break. "This is about fairness," said Countryman, chief executive of Liberty Mutual Group, a large property and casualty insurer based in Boston.

Countryman is the latest insurance executive to lend his voice to the effort to cut insurance taxes in Massachusetts. In an interview, he laid out the arguments the industry has been using to bolster its case for tax relief: that insurance taxes here are extremely high, that other states are wooing Massachusetts insurers, that the insurance industry is worth hanging on to, and that most of the state's other big industries have already won tax cuts.
