TCI Pitches Its Cable Television Network to Tacoma, Wash.(Originated from The News Tribune, Tacoma, Wash.)

TACOMA, Wash.--Oct. 28--TCI President Leo Hindery thinks his cable television company can build a better, and far cheaper, communications network in Tacoma than city officials are preparing to do.

Further, he says even if the city decides to build a competing system, TCI plans to upgrade its current cable TV offerings in Tacoma with a fiber-optic system that could do everything the city's system would.

At a Monday meeting of The News Tribune's editorial board, Hindery said the City Council, which meets on the matter at 5 p.m. today, ((cq Tuesday)) is about to waste $70 million. That's the difference between what TCI says such a system would cost it to build and what the city estimates its costs will be.
