Lotus to Unveil New Software Package.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

Nov. 3--Lotus Development Corp., with backing from heavyweight partners, today will unveil a streamlined software "suite" that some analysts said could boost the Java programming language and the network computer movement.

The $49 eSuite introduction is also significant because it represents a bold attempt to drastically shrink software suites, which are a combination of several applications traditionally sold separately. Suites have been getting so bulky that they consume large portions of a computer's hard disk drive.

IBM's Lotus unit, with support from Sun Microsystems Inc., Netscape Communications Corp., Oracle Corp., America Online, Intel Corp. and Novell Inc., will first target eSuite, written in the Sun-created Java programming...
