Eckerd, CVS Expand Merchandise, Shake Up Pittsburgh's Drugstore Industry.(Originated from Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Nov. 5--Next time you pick up a prescription at your neighborhood Eckerd -- which, of course, used to be a Thrift Drug -- you might also walk out with a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs or a quart of ice cream.

While you peruse the cosmetics, shampoo and aspirin aisles, you might also notice some good buys on birthday party balloons or paper towels -- items the store didn't carry, or at least didn't display prominently, when it was still a Thrift.

Regular shoppers at Revco, another popular drugstore chain in the region, can also expect to find more "non-pharmacy" items lining the shelves soon, once the regional chain is absorbed by Rhode Island drugstore giant CVS next year.
