Sun Gains Ground in Battle to Make Java A Global Standard.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Nov. 18--Sun Microsystems Inc. won approval Monday from an international technology group to make its Java programming language a standard. The company has been in a contentious fight with competitors who hoped to block that stamp of approval.
While Sun still must jump through a number of hoops before Java becomes a standard, most observers expect the company to negotiate the process easily over the coming months.
Twenty member nations of the International Organization for Standardization voted to approve Sun's request to remain the funnel through which all Java standard applications flow. Only the United States and China voted against the proposal.
