SAN JOSE, Calif.--Dec. 8--Whom do you trust?

In the real world, trust is granted because of familiarity, occupation, status, or the fact that someone else you trust vouches for the person in question.

In cyberspace, however, anybody can claim to be a police officer, an expert, or even your mother, so none of those techniques work quite as well.

Internet researchers are trying to hammer out solutions to the problem of identification, and of authorization, which grants an anonymous user access to information. Those capabilities will be critical to the development of electronic commerce and the relaying of sensitive information such as financial or medical records.
