Eleven Electric Utilities Consider Forming Regional Entity.(Originated from Akron Beacon Journal, Ohio)

AKRON, Ohio--Dec. 10--Akron-based FirstEnergy Corp. says it's keeping its options open as the electric utility industry continues to restructure.
The company announced Tuesday that its four principle operating companies -- Ohio Edison Co., The Illuminating Co., Pennsylvania Power Co. and Toledo Edison Co. -- have signed a "memorandum of understanding" with seven other investor-owned electric utilities "to explore the creation of an independent, regional transmission entity."
The so-called "independent system operator" would manage the group's combined 30,000 transmission lines covering Maryland, lower Michigan, northern and central Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Virginia. The transmission investment of the companies totals...
