U.S. Asks Judge to Hold Microsoft In Contempt in Internet Browser Case.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

WASHINGTON--Dec. 18--The Justice Department asked a federal court judge here Monday to hold Microsoft Corp. in contempt for failing to comply with his order in an antitrust case.

The Judge had ordered the company to offer a current version of its Windows 95 operating software that would work without its Explorer Internet browser. The company has said producing such software was technologically impossible.

The Justice Department called Microsoft's plans to offer either a broken or an outdated version of the software as an alternative a "naked attempt" to evade the federal court order.

The dispute comes as Microsoft appears under increasingly aggressive scrutiny by federal and state regulators.
