It's Easy to Separate Microsoft Windows from Web Browser, Judge Suggests.(Originated from San Jose Mercury News, Calif.)

WASHINGTON--Dec. 20--A federal judge here expressed skepticism Friday at Microsoft's reported inability to comply with his order to market its current Windows 95 operating software without its Internet Explorer browser.

Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, who is overseeing an antitrust case against Microsoft, challenged the company to "educate" him at a hearing next month as to why it could not simply run a program that removes browser icons and listings.

The judge said he said he wanted both Microsoft and the U.S. Department of Justice to return to the courtroom Jan. 13 for up to three days of hearings on the Justice Department's most recent request to find Microsoft in contempt of court for failing to remove the browser.
